Nansha International Container Terminal (hereinafter referred to as “NICT”), a branch of Guangzhou Port Co., Ltd, was founded on May 14th, 2014 and put into trial operation on Sept.27th, 2014. It provides customers with comprehensive services, such as container loading and unloading, storage as well as relevant logistics and container management.

NICT, located at the estuary of Pearl River, is the geographic and geometric center with extremely convenient land and water transportation. Within 70 km trucking distance NICT covers several city clusters including Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Dongguan. NICT has a sailing distance of 38 nm from Hon Kong, 41 nm from Macau and 35 nm from Guishan anchorage. Currently, the channel depth is minus 17 meters with a bottom width of 243 meters. By the time the channel project’s fourth phase is completed, the channel bottom will be broadened to 385 meters, which will permit two-way navigation of the largest container vessel all day long.

Nansha Phase III project is not only a municipal and provincial key project, but also a strategic infrastructure project aiming to accelerate the construction of Guangzhou International Shipping Center. This project, which was approved by National Development and Reform Commission, is one of container terminal projects in the largest scale and the highest standard in recent years. Invested with total 7.5 billion yuan, the terminal has an area of 2,700,000 square meters, a quay length of 1177meters and a shoreline of 4178 meters. Equipped with 6 100000-ton-berth and 24 barge berths of 2000 tons, the terminal has a designed capacity of 5,700,000 TEUs and has a room for further improvement.

The container yard of NICT, equipped with 12 quay cranes, 36 yard cranes and 8 gantry cranes, could accommodate 200,000 TEUs. The 12 quay cranes are fitted with spreaders whose rated loading capacity has reached 65 tons. Four of these quay cranes that have an outreach of 70 meters and a lifting height of 49 meters are cranes with the maximum lifting height in the world. They are capable of operating Triple-E class container ship. The 36 yard cranes are motor driven rubber tyred gantry cranes with a loading capacity of 41 tons which adopt advanced technologies, such as energy feedback in electric network as well as speed regulating, energy saving and controlling in power units. Remote control interfaces are reserved in all these equipment for the realization of remote control in the future.

The berths 12#, 13# were put into trial operation on Sept.27th, 2014 and the annual throughput was about 300,000 TEU. The monthly throughput in August, 2015 exceeded 150,000 TEU, while the annual throughput reached 1,428,000 TEU. As for container vessels of 50000 tons, the working productivity has reached 190 TEU per hour and crane productivity has reached 40 TEU per hour. The average port stay is within 22 hours.

NICT is cooperating with two domestic shipping companies (Quanzhou Antong logistics Co., Ltd and Shanghai Zhonggu Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd) and have launched 7 internal trade shipping lines which are respectively Yingkou, Tianjin, Shandong, Wenzhou, Haikou, Rizhao and Qinzhou. As for foreign trade, it has developed barge business from Hongkong and Macao since Jan., 2016.
